Switching power supply
Monday, December 17th, 2007There are many kinds of power supplies used by people. All the machineries need different kinds of power supplies. Most of the machineries need a DC current which is of low voltage than the current which is provided by the electric supply company. A switching power supply is yet another kind of power supply. This power supply is different form other kinds of power supplies. Switching power supply has a regulator fitted in its structure. Switching power supply is an electronic power supply. It has a linear regulator in it.
A switching power supply is also called as SMPS, or switching mode power supply. With the regulator present in the power supply structure, it is possible to regulate the power supply to machinery by using this power supply. The linear regulator has a transistor which is able to specify the voltage output within its domain. The switching power supply regulates the output between saturation and cut off according to the requirement. This power supply is a little more advanced as compared to many other kinds of power supply. The regulatory function makes it more important and dependable for the users.
There are many advantages of a switching power supply over other forms of power supply. One of the most important advantages of this type of power supplies is that the size of the device is smaller. The efficiency of power supply in this case is much better. Heat generation is lesser as compared to many other power supplies. All these factors make switching power supply an easy to use and referred kind of power supply for the people. But this kind of power supplies is more complex. Electric noise produced by these power supplies is higher. The switching power supply has its own set of advantages and disadvantages but is commonly used these days.
